I have a massive fear of the unknown, as I think most of us do, and I struggle to make decisions without knowing how everything will pan out. This week I was talking to my boyfriend about my fears and worries and he told me a Søren Kirkegård quote that has stuck with me all week:
‘To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself.’
If we have a dream or something we know in our hearts we want to do or change, but it’s scary and we don’t know how it will go, it’s easy to stay in a place that feels comfortable and either convince ourselves it’s not important, or just ignore it. But in doing that, over the long term, we won’t end up living our lives to the full.
If we dare to go for what is unknown, but feels right and true for us, we may feel scared and unsteady to begin with, but we’ll know we’re following our heart and what feels right, and we’ll find our way.
If there’s something you really want to try or change in your life, a dream you’ve had for a long time but it’s felt too scary, what small thing can you do today, tomorrow, and the rest of this week to take a step towards it? Maybe it’s just writing it down, and thinking about what would be needed to make it happen. I once heard someone ask ‘if you had no fear, what would you do?’ and I think that’s a good question to ask ourselves every now and again.
I believe all our dreams and the things we get inspired by are there for a reason - if you follow that little niggle you will know you didn’t live on the sidelines, you went for it and learnt something along the way.
Sending you hugs, and know that if you feel scared about big decisions and changes, you’re not alone!
